and then there is the Solar Death Ray 3000!

dear erik took this project under his wing and made the SDR 3000 a fancy solar demonstration that was easy to use on the playa, at Camp & Sons and at the SF decompression.

burning with the sun

erik mounted the SDR 3000 on a trailer and added hydraulics for raising and lowering the dish so that it would be easy to track the angle of the sun.

tony with the SDR 3000

and, of course, erik added a wagon to help maneuver the SDR 3000 and painted the outside of the dish a beautiful shade of red! here's a photo of the SDR 3000 in the AEZ in 2006. pretty fancy, eh??

sdr 3000

the crowd loved it! on the playa in 2006, we toasted marshmallows and a few eyeballs, roasted hot dogs and sausages, boiled water for tea, and even made toast and a soft boiled egg!!

in this photo you can see the solar panel that was added at the top of the SDR. this panel provides power to the battery that runs the hydraulics! meanwhile, the flat portion of the trailer underneath the dish turns into a shaded picnic table! what a well-thought out project.

THANK YOU ERIK!
